FAQ

What programme shall I do my artwork in?
Artwork should ideally be supplied in one of the following programs. Quark Xpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Freehand.

What is Bleed?
If you have an image that goes all the way to an edge, which will be cut, remember to add "bleed" i.e. extend that image another 3mm beyond the edge to allow a margin of error for our cutter. Please keep in mind that anything you place on that 3mm bleed area will be cropped off and will not appear on your final product!

What resolution should I make my images?
All color and grayscale image files should be scanned at 350 ppi (pixels per inch) at actual printing size. Save your images as .TIFF or Photoshop¨ .EPS files (we prefer TIFFs when possible.) Avoid saving your images as .JPG, .GIF, or .BMP formats, as they will most likely severely degrade their quality. 1-bit images should have a much higher resolution (1200 ppi is recommended.)

What is CMYK?
CMYK refers to the printing inks used in four-color process printing. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are the only four colors used to produce full-color photographs and designs. These colors can be combined and printed to emulate a wide number of other colors. If you look carefully at a printed color photograph in any magazine or book, you'll see that it's made up of rows of tiny dots of each of the four colors called a halftone screen. The dots work together, at different angles, to fool your eye into seeing a full spectrum of colors. Your images should be in the proper color mode (usually CMYK, grayscale, or bitmap – NEVER RGB.) Also, remember that any images used on B&W sections should be in grayscale or bitmap mode and not CMYK.

What are spot colours?
A spot colour is a special premixed ink that is used instead of, or (less commonly) in addition to, CMYK process inks, and that requires its own printing plate on a printing press. Use spot colour when few colours are needed and colour accuracy is critical. Spot colour inks can reproduce colours that are outside the gamut of process colours such as metallic colours like gold and silver.

Can I send you my artwork files by email?
Artwork can be sent via email. We have a 5MB file size restriction.
